Comprehensive Guide for Mechanical Testing of Materials

What is Meant by Mechanical Testing?

There are standard testing procedures that help determine the properties of a material to check whether they are suitable for a particular application.


The components manufactured through different processes must meet international standards like ISO and ASTM. Once you carry out this mechanical testing, selecting a suitable material proves to be easier and perfect so that you face no problem in the manufacturing process.




Testing Processes for the Assessment of Material Strength


Testing of Tensile

The tensile test is carried out in two distinct ways: through an electric machine or a hydraulic process. The material is subjected to various pressures, and the records are noted.


This process tends to identify the material's factors, including its capability to handle stress and pressure and how far it could get deformed. The process consists of adding pressure on the opposite side of the material, and until it breaks, it is pulled.


The recordings of the tensile strength are plotted on the graph, and then the strength of the material is measured accordingly.


Testing of Torsion

In the process of torsion testing, the material's behavior is analyzed. The material is displaced in an angular form, and some stress is laid on it. This tells many things about the material, its elasticity of the material, its strength of the material and how ductile it is.


There are different kinds of testing processes for torsion. This consists of adding pressure to the material, twisting it until it breaks, and reviewing its behavior. The testing standards in torsion comprise ISO 7800 and ASTM A938.


Testing for Fatigue

In fatigue testing, the material is subjected to different kinds of loads. These loads are applied to the material as flexure, axial, or torsion. The material is switched between the mean and alternating load; if the material cannot handle this stress, it breaks.


The observations are consistently recorded, and a graph is then formed to create a test result over which decision-making is carried out.


Testing for Fracture Mechanics

The fracture mechanics test is where a material is subjected to a certain pressure, and the energy that causes a fracture or a breakage in the material is assessed here. This way, the ability of the material to resist breaking is being tested. The standards for the fracture mechanics test are ASTM E1820, EEMUA pub 158, and BS 7448.


Compression Testing

A material will pass through various circumstances; hence it is imperative to test whether it can stay intact when subjected to crushing loads. Some materials remain intact, and some don't, so this will help assess which material must be chosen.


This testing process is suitable for all kinds of materials. It is suitable for metals, plastics and ceramics so, all of them could be tested using this testing process.


Testing for Deformity

This test is carried out to assess how material deformed after being suppressed to a certain amount of stress. In this test, the material is subjected to constant stress, and after a specific span of time, the deformation of the material is recorded.


In this process, the stress over the material is laid down by making it pass through high temperatures, and the readings are noted down on the graph. This process is widely suitable for assessing the material used in springs, metal profiles, and joints that are subjected to soldering.

Testing for the Impact

The test for the impact is to check the amount of force that could end up breaking the material. The two tests are conducted in this regard, and the material is broken down in both tests. The main aim is to measure the energy required to break down the material, which is recorded.


Test for the Hardness of Materials

As the name suggests, this test is conducted to check how hard the material is. In this case, the raw material is tested, and the ability of that material to resist indentation is tested. There are two kinds of commonly chosen hardness tests, and they comprise the following:


● In the first test, the steel ball, along with a load, is laid on the material for some time. Later, the indentation over the material is measured, caused by the steel ball. This test must be avoided for materials that have welded joints.


● In the second kind of test, a diamond pyramid is placed on the material instead of a steel ball. Later, the indent is measured on the material caused by the pyramid. This test is ideally suitable for materials that have welded joints.


Testing for Corrosion

The corrosion test carried out the reaction assessment of the coated and uncoated metals by subjecting them to conditions that may or may not be saline. Many tests may be chosen in this regard, and some of them are:


● Saltwater is sprayed on the materials to see their reaction concerning being coated or uncoated, and the appearance will be observed on the material.

● The second process consists of spraying a mixture of accelerated copper and acetic acid with salt on the material, and the reaction of this spray is then observed.

● A test where the material is subjected to an aggressive aqueous solution, and later on, weight loss is observed in the material.

Mechanical testing of material is an essential aspect that cannot be subject to ignorance. When a material is chosen for any component manufacturing, it must add durability to the final product. If the material itself lacks durability, how would the component last longer?
