Rapid Injection Molding & Bridge Tooling Services in China

Somewhere between a one-off prototype and full mass production sits the bridge: you need hundreds or thousands of real, molded parts, but not a hardened steel tool that costs a fortune. Rapid injection molding fills that gap with soft aluminum or pre-hardened steel molds built in 1-2 weeks, so you can validate market and manufacturing before committing to production tooling.

1. The Bridge From Prototype to Production

Bridge production lets you launch, test field response and absorb design changes without a six-figure steel tool. It is the natural next step after CNC validation - once the design is frozen, move the part to a molded process for lower unit cost.

2. Rapid Injection Molding vs Rapid Tooling

The terms overlap. Rapid injection molding is the molded part program; rapid tooling is the mold itself, built quickly to support either bridge or production runs. Our rapid tooling page goes deeper on mold design and amortization.

3. Tooling: Aluminum or Steel

Aluminum molds are cheaper and faster to cut, ideal for bridge runs up to roughly 10,000 shots. Pre-hardened steel suits longer bridge runs and tighter tolerance. Pick aluminum unless volume or wear pushes you to steel.

4. Materials for Molded Parts

Most commercial thermoplastics mold cleanly - the selection guide is in our materials guide. For large lightweight enclosures, reaction injection molding (RIM) is often a better fit than injection molding.

5. Lead Time & Volume Thresholds

Tooling lead time is 1-2 weeks for aluminum, a little longer for steel; part cycle times are seconds. The crossover from CNC to molding is usually around 100 parts, with molding pulling clearly ahead by 1,000. Time-critical programs are covered by our quick-turn prototyping guide.

6. When Molding Beats CNC

Choose molding over CNC machining (see our CNC plastic prototyping guide) once quantity clears the crossover and the design is stable. For metal parts, the same logic applies through our metal prototyping page. The cost mechanics are detailed in our cost and quote guide.

7. DFM for Molding

Molded parts need draft, uniform wall thickness and sensible gate locations. Good DFM at the CAD stage avoids sinks, warpage and short shots - and shortens tooling time.

Requesting a Quote

Send the frozen model, material, expected volume and target lifetime. Shops will quote tooling and per-part price separately, which is the right way to compare offers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What volume makes rapid injection molding worthwhile?

A: Typically from about 100 parts upward; molding pulls clearly ahead of CNC on unit cost by roughly 1,000 parts, assuming the design is frozen.

Q: Aluminum or steel mold for bridge production?

A: Aluminum for most bridge runs up to about 10,000 shots - cheaper and faster. Steel when volume or wear demands it.

Q: How long does tooling take?

A: About 1-2 weeks for an aluminum bridge mold, slightly longer for pre-hardened steel, before production parts start.

Q: Can molded parts match CNC tolerances?

A: Molded parts hold tight tolerances but see more variation part-to-part than a single CNC piece; design for the process and confirm critical dimensions on the first shots.

Q: Is RIM the same as injection molding?

A: No. RIM uses liquid polyurethane in a soft mold for large, lightweight enclosures; injection molding uses melted thermoplastic in a metal mold for higher volumes.
