Tooling is the difference between a part that costs a few dollars each and one that costs a few cents. Rapid tooling builds a working mold in days or weeks rather than months, so you can run bridge or low-volume production without a hardened steel investment. 1. What Rapid Tooling Means

Rapid tooling is a mold built quickly - usually from aluminum or pre-hardened steel - to support bridge or production runs of a few hundred to a few hundred thousand parts. 2. Mold Material: Data and Trade-offs

Pick aluminum unless volume or wear pushes you to steel. Most bridge programs sit comfortably under 50,000 shots, which aluminum handles.

3. Shot Life - When the Mold Wears Out

Wear shows up first as flash and dimensional drift on thin features, then as surface degradation. Plan a re-cut or replacement before the wear band eats into your tolerance band. A simple rule we use: size the mold so you replace it with margin to spare, not after the first rejected part. 4. Lead Time by Mold Type

An aluminum bridge mold runs about 1-2 weeks; pre-hardened steel adds another week or two; hardened production steel can reach 3-5 weeks. 5. How Amortization Changes Unit Cost

Tooling is a fixed upfront; each extra part spreads it thinner. Worked example: a $2,000 aluminum mold. At 100 parts the tool adds $20/part; at 500 parts it adds $4/part; at 2,000 parts it adds $1/part. That is why per-part price falls steeply through the first few hundred units and then flattens. 6. Rapid Tooling vs RIM

7. Requesting a Quote
